Tiny yellow-greenish flowers, male in spikes, female solitary or 2-3.
Short-stalked lanceolate leaves, opposite, small-toothed.
Unbranched stems. Creeping rhizomes. More/less hairy. Height: 15-40cm.

Damp, usually shaded, neutral or calcareous soils. Woods, also limestone grikes.
Native Co.Clare, elsewhere possibly accidental introduction.

Similar: Annual Mercury, M. annua.
Branched stems. Almost hairless. E, S Ireland.
