Garlic Mustard / Jack-by-the-hedge White flowers, 4-petalled. Erect beak-less fruit on short thick stalks. Pale-green, coarse-toothed, heart-shaped leaves. Smell of garlic when crushed. Usually unbranched, more/less hairless. Height: to 120cm. Found on disturbed ground in woodland, hedges, roadsides, river banks. Prefers moist, relatively fertile soils. Locally frequent N and central Ireland, rare in the west and in Waterford and Wexford. |
