Fragrant Orchids Dense spike of long-spurred, sweet-scented flowers. Usually pink to purplish. Short lip, 3-lobed, lobes more/less equal. Long, narrow, keeled leaves. Three subspecies are recognised, but can be difficult to distinguish between: Marsh Fragrant Orchid, G. conopsea ssp. densiflora Heath Fragrant Orchid, G. conopsea ssp. borealis Common Fragrant Orchid, G. conopsea ssp. conopsea Dry or moist heathy grassland, limestone pavements, fens, dune-slacks, cut-away bog. Frequent in central Ireland, local elsewhere. |
