Musk Thistle / Nodding Thistle

Flowering time: May-September. Biennial. Probably introduced.

Large bright red-purple flowers, solitary, rounded, semi-drooping.
Leaves deeply-pinnate lobed, veins woolly below, lobes spine-tipped.
Stem erect, cottony, winged. Achenes simple. Height: 20-100cm.

Found on thin calcareous grassland and roadsides. Very rare, but recorded from Co. Wexford since 2000
