Woody Nightshade / Bitter-sweet Clusters of downward-hanging purple flowers, yellow anthers, reflexed petals. Poisonous red egg-shaped berries. Lower leaves, stalked, usually small lobes at base. Upper with 3 leaflets. Stems woody at base, scrambling, climbing. Height: To 2m. All parts of this plant are poisonous. Damp woodland, hedgerows, streamsides. Similar: S. dulcamara var. marinum is prostrate, found on shingle beaches. |
