Dogwood Umbels of creamy-white flowers, 4-petalled. Small purple-black fruit. Untoothed opposite leaves, turning reddish-purple in autumn. Leaves usually with 5 or less pairs lateral veins. Reddish-green twigs. Height: To 4m. Prefers neutral or calcareous soils. Woodland, hedgerows. Rare as a native, but often planted in gardens and amenity ground.
