Small clusters of green-white flowers, usually 5-petalled.
Berries green turn reddish, black when ripe. Buds hairy.
Alternate leaves, un-toothed, turn yellow or red in autumn.
Erect thornless branches.

Usually found in lowland areas, damp woods, scrubs, fens, heaths,
avoids permanently waterlogged ground.
Rare native in W, central Ireland, often introduced in gardens, hedges.
