Hanging reddish-pink flowers with purple-green bracts.
Inedible purple-black berries, enjoyed by birds.
Leaves opposite, oval, pointed. Hollow stems, woody with age, to 2m.
Planted as ground-cover for pheasants. Self-seeding and bird-sown.

Woodland, hedgerows, waste ground railway banks, roadsides, walls.
Garden escape, fairly widespread.
