Flowering time: June-October. Biennial. Native.

Deep purple flowers. Few erect globular flower-heads, slightly cottony.
Green outer bracts, prickly, spreading. Wavy, deep-pinnate leaves, ending in sharp prickles. Few toothed. White-cottony beneath, rough, almost-prickly above. Stout erect stems with spiny wings. Height: 70-150cm.

Abundant on disturbed ground, grassland, roadsides.
