Large scented flowers, pink or white. Single or in clusters. Styles not projecting. Sepals bent backwards on young fruit. Fruit red, hairless, sepals falling before ripe. Leaves hairless to slightly pubescent, often even-toothed. 2-3 pairs leaflets. Strong broad-based prickles, hooked. Arching, straggling stems. Height: to 3-4m. Very variable, hybrids often occur.
