Branched, downy flower-heads with 2-flowered spikelets. Each flower has a prominent curved awn protruding from it. Conspicuously hairy stem-joints but the stems and leaf-sheaths are usually hairless. Flat, soft, greenish leaves. Locally frequent on well-drained acidic or neutral soils. Woods, heaths, waste ground. Can spread into damper grassland. Similar: Yorkshire Fog, H. lanatus. |
